For example, when Master Hanshan encountered the personal effects of Su Dongpo, he felt a particular closeness and familiarity. This was information conveyed by the manas, which the consciousness discerned and responded to with a sense of intimacy. This discernment was vague and indeterminate, yet the feeling was intensely clear, a sensation transmitted from the manas to the consciousness. If the consciousness possessed the wisdom to further recognize the manas's intent, it could grasp more detailed and precise information, moving beyond mere feelings of familiarity and closeness. In that case, the manas might satisfy its own inclinations, leading to further thoughts and actions.
For instance, if Person B consistently speaks ill of Person A behind their back, Person A's consciousness may be unaware, but the manas perceives it. Thus, when Person A encounters Person B, the manas inevitably transmits this information, causing the consciousness to inexplicably feel uncomfortable and develop a dislike for Person B. However, the consciousness cannot pinpoint the reason for this aversion, while the manas understands but cannot articulate it. If the consciousness were wise, it would discern the cause—knowing that Person B often speaks ill of them—and might even plan retaliatory actions. Should the manas also agree to retaliation, then conflict between Persons A and B becomes inevitable. Therefore, one should not gossip about or judge others behind their backs, nor should one scheme or set traps in secret. For no secret remains hidden forever—walls have ears. Forming negative karmic ties with others will inevitably lead to retribution; no one exists beyond the law of cause and effect, and no action occurs without consequences.
The manas can also transmit all afflictions—such as greed, hatred, and delusion—to the consciousness. For instance, upon seeing material possessions, greed may arise, and the desire to possess them emerges. The consciousness may feel too embarrassed or afraid to act, but with the manas inciting and directing from behind, the consciousness will cautiously, stealthily, and covertly devise ways to seize the possessions. Conversely, when the manas is upright, it can transmit righteous thoughts to the consciousness; when it is resolute, it can make the consciousness steadfast; and when it is wise, it can ensure the consciousness acts in accordance with principle and Dharma, encountering defiled circumstances yet remaining uncontaminated.
