During the process of cultivation, bit by bit, the ignorance of the mental faculty is eliminated, afflictions are eliminated, self-attachment is eliminated. When the mental faculty becomes unattached to the Three Realms, the dharmas of the Three Realms will cease. Ultimately, the mental faculty must be extinguished, entering the state of Nirvana without residue, which is tranquil and cool. Ignorance is the fundamental cause, the primary cause of the cycle of birth and death. If ignorance is not eliminated, the activities of the mental faculty do not cease; craving within the Three Realms does not cease, and the suffering of birth and death does not cease. However, sentient beings have become accustomed to the suffering of birth and death. Having long dwelt in a cesspit, they no longer perceive its foulness and do not regard birth and death as great suffering; they do not recognize the immense suffering within birth and death. They cling incessantly to birth and death. When sentient beings do not wish to awaken, even the Buddha cannot save them.
