How to Refine Essence into Qi to Transform the Physical Body?

Ru Chun: Shortly after sitting down, a crisp, crackling sound arose in my mind, like stepping on crushed ice. With each crackle, it felt as though the structure of my head was collapsing. Simultaneously, I saw my chest cavity resembling a lily-like structure—vast and deep, accompanied by a sense of comfort. When my breath reached the chest, it seemed to vanish into emptiness almost instantly. Suddenly, a stream of qi gathered within my palms, which were in the meditation mudra, gradually expanding until my palms felt as though they were holding a large balloon, stretched to the brim. I thought only ten minutes had passed, but upon ending the session, I realized an hour had gone by.

Commentary: This phenomenon occurs when qi channels pass through the head, unblocking the skull. Because bone is relatively hard, the material aspect of qi striking against it produces a crackling sound. Moreover, the location of the skull’s sound is very close to the subtle ear faculty, making the sound seem exceptionally loud. This is an ascending qi, rising from the Muladhara Chakra through the Manipura and Anahata Chakras, finally surging to the head. As it passes through the Anahata Chakra, the qi in the chest cavity becomes extremely subtle, almost as if vaporized. This causes the chest to feel expansive and deep, while the coarse, heavy breath from external respiration vaporizes upon reaching this area, making the breath imperceptible. From this point onward, one’s heart and mind become broad and inclusive. The subtle, vaporized qi circulating within the chest cavity brings profound comfort.

The expansion of qi in the palms indicates that, through meditative concentration, the four elements within the originally condensed qi have been altered, becoming lighter—a phenomenon of vaporization. This aligns with the Daoist principle of refining essence into qi. The vaporized qi, with its subtle four elements, creates a sensation of swelling and enlargement, making the palms feel inflated and full. If the entire body becomes vaporized, the whole form will feel larger and taller, light and comfortable, akin to a celestial body. Celestial bodies are composed of subtle four elements, free from heaviness, light enough to fly, devoid of illness, and possessing fragrance. When the human body is cultivated to the point of vaporization, it becomes free from disease, light, comfortable, and feels tall.

How can qi be transformed? Through persistent cultivation in meditative concentration, severing inner emotional attachments and desires, qi ceases to dissipate outward, and the mind becomes tranquil. As the body follows the mind, the essence, qi, and spirit within undergo transformation, gradually refined and vaporized, becoming refined. The body transforms, and a fragrance emerges. Ordinary bodies often experience blockages; the qi within is condensed and stagnant, resulting in an unpleasant odor. Once fully vaporized, the foul smell vanishes, replaced instead by fragrance.
