Dedication (huixiang) occurs when the mental faculty (manas) of one being resolves to transfer merits to other sentient beings, and the mental faculties of those beings willingly accept. The Tathāgatagarbhas (Buddha-nature) of both parties will then coordinate to accomplish the transfer. Sentient beings devoid of intelligence, lacking the capacity to cultivate blessings or wisdom themselves, rely entirely on the dedication of merits from other beings and all Bodhisattvas. Through this, they accumulate a measure of blessed virtue. Leaning on the power of these modest blessings, they gradually improve the quality and level of their existence over countless kalpas (aeons), until finally they are reborn as humans. Therefore, having attained human birth ourselves and having the opportunity to learn and practice the Buddha Dharma, we should feel gratitude towards the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and virtuous friends who have delivered and liberated us. As for how to express this gratitude, we should emulate the way those Buddhas and Bodhisattvas delivered us by striving to deliver and liberate all sentient beings.
