Inner disappointment arises because the manas' desires are unfulfilled

The eighth consciousness always tries its best to cooperate with the manas' mental factor of volition, striving to fulfill all of the manas' demands without a single complaint. But whether the manas has merit and blessings to enjoy, whether seeds have been planted, whether those seeds have ripened, and whether the conditions for the growth of karmic retribution are complete—these are major questions. If these conditions are not complete, the eighth consciousness has no way to satisfy the manas' needs and desires.

The various dissatisfactions in human life demonstrate that the eighth consciousness has no way to fulfill the manas' desires and demands. It is only when the manas has a need that goes unfulfilled that one feels things are not going one's way; if the manas has no needs, there is no sense of dissatisfaction or such feelings, because no such goal was ever set and no such demands were ever made. With no demands, no intention, and no desire, one naturally would not want to harvest any fruit; and without harvesting fruit, there would naturally be no disappointment or sighing in lament. Of course, many of the wishes set by the manas may be unknown to the mind consciousness, so it does not know why the manas is displeased or unhappy, why one feels inexplicably melancholy and bereft, or why one feels inexplicably jealous of others.

<h2 style="text-indent: 2em;">"May All Wishes Come True" Is Accomplished by the Manas' Mental Factor of Desire</h2>

"May all wishes come true" is accomplished by the tathāgatagarbha impelled by the manas, and it represents the fulfillment of the manas' wishes. Within "may all wishes come true," there is the desire of the mind consciousness as well as the desire of the manas. The mind consciousness' desire must pass through the manas' determination (adhimokṣa) and review; if the manas agrees and accepts the imprinting, it can come to have the same desire as the mind consciousness, and then the tathāgatagarbha cooperates with this desire, bringing the manas' aspiration to fruition. If the mind consciousness' desire is not endorsed by the manas, and the manas does not want it, then the mind consciousness' thinking is in vain—useless effort. As for the manas' desires on its own, the mind consciousness may not perceive them, yet they can still come to fruition; and when they do, the mind consciousness may still not know that it was the manas' desire that brought them about—this is the mind consciousness' ignorance.
