Subhuti then asked: When virtuous men and virtuous women have resolved their minds upon anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, how should they abide, and how should they subdue their minds? He was inquiring about how a bodhisattva, after generating the aspiration to attain Buddhahood for the vast benefit of all sentient beings, should abide in this mind and subdue this mind, preventing the arising of incorrect perceptions, thoughts, and irrational mental fabrications. The World-Honored One replied: Excellent, Subhuti. Just as you have said, the Tathāgata indeed skillfully protects and contemplates all bodhisattvas, and skillfully instructs and entrusts all bodhisattvas. Now listen carefully, I shall explain for you. After virtuous men and virtuous women have resolved their minds upon attaining Buddhahood, they should abide thus and subdue their minds in this manner. Subhuti then replied: Very well, World-Honored One, I am most willing to hear your explanation.
