Since all various marks are born from and manifest through the tathāgatagarbha, the operation of all various marks cannot be separated from the tathāgatagarbha. When seeing marks, a person with wisdom can discover the true reality that is together with the marks. Who is it that discovers the true reality of the true mind? It is the deluded mind. Enlightenment is when the deluded mind finds the true mind and thereby attains prajñā wisdom. The true mind can be found in all the various illusory marks operating within the five aggregates (pañcaskandha) and the eighteen elements (dhātus)—for example, in raising the hand or moving the foot, in greeting and seeing off, in recollection of the Buddha (buddhānusmṛti) and prostrating to the Buddha, even in hitting and scolding people, the true mind is journeying along together with all of it. The Sixth Patriarch said: 若见性,轮刀上阵也见 — this is exactly the principle.
The Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: 菩萨举足下足都从道场来;the Tang dynasty Layman Pang said: 搬柴及运水,神通并妙用;Deshan used a staff to strike people in order to reveal this principle to students; Linji used a great shout to point it out to students; Zhaozhou simply said: 吃茶去;Chan Master Yongming told his disciples: 拜佛去. All these Chan masters were using various means of zen repartee to point things out to students; when merit and conditions were complete, they would awaken to true reality and bring to light the great matter. A disciple came to his master and said: 自某甲到此已三年了,从不见师父为我开示佛法. The master said: 我什么地方没开示?你递水来我就喝,你送饭来我就吃,你问讯我就和南,什么处没开示佛法?The disciple pondered after hearing this, and the master said: 要见就见,思个什么?The disciple immediately awakened.
