Selected Discourses from the Sutra of the Father and Son Collection (82)

The Buddha said, "Great King, it is so, it is so. Foolish ordinary beings, upon seeing delicious food, give rise to attachment in their minds, and engage in greedy actions. They perform three bodily actions, four verbal actions, and three mental actions. From the very beginning of their creation, these actions perish in an instant. After these karmas perish, they do not abide in the east, south, west, north, the four directions, above, below, or in the middle. But at the final moment, when the life faculty ceases, their own karmic retribution fully manifests before them, just like waking from a dream and recalling the events of the dream."

The Buddha said, "Great King, it is indeed so. When foolish ordinary beings encounter delicious food, they give rise to greedy attachment in their hearts, and create actions of greed. They perform three bodily karmas, four verbal karmas, and three mental karmas. From the very beginning of their creation, the karmic actions perish instantly as they are created. After these karmic actions perish, they do not abide in the east, west, south, north, the four directions, above, or below. However, when life is about to end, the karmic retribution created in this lifetime fully manifests, like after waking from a dream, still recalling the events of the dream."
