What Is Merit?

Merit is the experiential benefit of wisdom; with wisdom, karmic obstacles are eliminated. Severing the view of self and illuminating the mind will eradicate the karmic hindrances leading to the three evil realms. Wisdom-based repentance also generates merit, capable of dissolving karmic obstructions. Throughout the cultivation process, the growth of wisdom progressively eliminates karmic hindrances of varying degrees. When all evil karma is exhausted, one attains Buddhahood.
