If the power of concentration for contemplative practice is lacking, referring to anatomical diagrams to contemplate the material form as illusory and devoid of self will yield no effect regardless of how long one persists. The diagrams remain merely diagrams, and one remains oneself, gaining nothing more than knowledge of human anatomy. Discoursing fluently on anatomy does not signify possessing the wisdom and experiential realization to sever the view of self. Speaking about it is one thing; without concentration, it cannot be considered true contemplative practice—it is merely study. Only the simultaneous cultivation of tranquility and insight, maintaining equal emphasis on concentration and wisdom, constitutes the genuine starting point for practice. Studying theoretical knowledge and engaging in actual contemplative practice are two distinct stages of cultivation. One must never mistake studying theory for contemplative practice, nor mistake memorized knowledge for one's own wisdom.
It is impossible for someone lacking even access concentration, let alone any degree of meditative absorption, to claim to have severed the view of self or to be a Stream-enterer or Once-returner. The mind will not attain that level of certitude. Even if the conscious mind might seem to affirm it, there remains a lingering doubt in the depths of the heart, preventing true, unreserved confirmation.
