When walking, standing, sitting, lying down, or engaging in any activity, maintain pure awareness. However, pure awareness is not a single thought; it minimally involves two thoughts, with three being normal. To attain meditative concentration, whatever one is doing, there must be a primary focus within the mind. Maintain this primary focus without losing it—this is meditative concentration. Other thoughts can be held with light attention. This indeed requires some skill and can be practiced as a fixed discipline. Once familiar, the mind becomes relaxed and effortless. There are not many techniques involved. As attachment to worldly dharmas diminishes, pure awareness can be sustained. When the mental faculty primarily adheres to this focus, with minimal distraction toward other dharmas, consciousness naturally stabilizes upon this focus. Other matters then require less and lighter mental engagement. In daily life, reduce interests and approach unimportant matters with a mindset of mere accommodation.
