If a person knows they are wrong, how to proceed and how to deal with the mistake—what does it depend on? After the mind consciousness knows the mistake, the manas must also be made to know it. Once the manas knows the mistake, things become easy. If the mind consciousness transmits its mistake to the manas completely and in full detail, the manas will give rise to deliberation (manana) about right and wrong.
After the mind consciousness has known something simply and roughly, it still needs to contemplate and engage in contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā), coming to know it in finer detail. In this process, the manas is easily influenced and can give rise to its own deliberation. The mind consciousness must contemplate and know things in a fine and detailed way, with more conclusive evidence, and only in meditative concentration (samādhi) can it contemplate in a detailed and thorough manner. For the manas to deliberate clearly and distinctly, it must be in meditative concentration, free from interference.
The mind consciousness knows that it must use itself to influence the manas, but at this point the manas does not necessarily know that the mind consciousness wants to influence it or is influencing it. First, it depends on whether the manas has the wisdom to understand the mind consciousness's thoughts and ideas; second, it depends on whether the mind consciousness can deeply understand the content of the Dharma principles in its mind, and whether it can contemplate them very clearly; third, it depends on whether the manas, in ordinary times, understands the mind consciousness very well, and whether the two communicate and coordinate well.
When the manas discovers that the mind consciousness wants to influence and change it, if the manas's habit of self-grasping is very heavy and the mind consciousness's ideas seriously contradict the manas, the manas will be displeased, feel very uncomfortable, and may even want to avoid and resist. If the mind consciousness's ideas do not contradict the manas too much, the manas can accept them. Once the manas has been subdued, the more it understands principles, the more easily it will accept influence and persuasion.
