The Meaning of 'Not Being Mutually Present'

I am not in what belongs to me, and what belongs to me is not in me—this is their mutual relationship. Sometimes the manas takes the aggregate of form as the self, and then takes the aggregates of feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness as what belongs to the self, and thus perceives the self and what belongs to the self as mutually fused together. Sometimes the manas takes the aggregate of feeling as the self, and takes the aggregates of form, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness as what belongs to the self, believing that the aggregate of feeling is mutually fused together with the other aggregates.

But in reality, the aggregate of form is not the self, and the aggregates of feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness that are taken as belonging to the self are also not what belongs to the self; they all have nothing to do with the self, are not the self, and must all be eradicated—do not regard these functions and activities as real and imperishable. Taking the five aggregates as the self is a wrong view (mithyā-dṛṣṭi), and taking them as belonging to the self is likewise a wrong view; both should be broken through. Only by establishing the correct view that the five aggregates have no self and nothing belonging to the self can one gradually transcend birth and death.
