If the manas is to correct its own mental conduct, it must first be able to introspectively observe its own mental conduct, recognize the deficiencies in it, and then be willing to correct them.
How can the manas introspectively observe its own mental conduct? Through the mind consciousness observing, analyzing, and reflecting upon its own mental conduct, a conclusion is drawn and fed back to the manas; the manas will then deliberate (manasikāra) on this information, thereby correctly understanding its own mental conduct. At the same time, the mind consciousness reasons that such mental conduct must be corrected; otherwise, evil karma will be created and evil retribution suffered, or one's progress on the path will be obstructed, adding much suffering. Once the manas understands this, it will decide to correct itself. Without the correct and reasoned thinking and analysis of the mind consciousness, the manas cannot recognize the problems within itself, and thus cannot correct itself; the mind consciousness is the assistant that helps the manas subdue ignorance and afflictions.
