Can the manas cultivate and realize its own wholesome and unwholesome mental actions?

If the manas is to correct its own mental conduct, it must first be able to introspect upon its own mental conduct, recognize its deficiencies, and then be willing to correct them.

How can the manas introspect upon its own mental conduct? Through the mind consciousness observing, analyzing, and reflecting upon its own mental conduct, a conclusion is drawn and fed back to the manas; the manas will then deliberate on this information, thereby coming to a correct understanding of its own mental conduct. At the same time, the mind consciousness reasons that such mental conduct must be corrected; otherwise, evil karma will be created and evil retribution suffered, or progress on the path will be obstructed, adding much suffering. Once the manas understands this, it will resolve to correct itself. Apart from the mind consciousness's correct and reasoned thinking and analysis, the manas cannot recognize the problems within itself, and thus cannot correct itself. The mind consciousness is the manas's assistant in subduing ignorance and afflictions.
