At the beginning of meditation when meditative concentration has not yet arisen, closing the eyes reveals darkness. With slight meditative concentration, the visual field appears gray. As concentration strengthens, the visual field turns reddish. When concentration further intensifies, the visual field becomes pale red, pale yellow, or grayish-white, eventually turning pure white. Purple resembles red but may appear slightly lighter. This phenomenon indicates the gradual diminishing of obscurations related to the aggregate of form, as meditative concentration reduces these obscurations.
Upon meditative cultivation surpassing the realm of the aggregate of form, after transcending this realm, one perceives forms without any obscuration whatsoever. Everything becomes visible regardless of obstacles, distance, or height.
When meditative cultivation surpasses the realm of the aggregate of feeling, transcending this realm, one ceases to feel sensations of cold, heat, touch, or pain in the physical body. One becomes free from painful feelings and remains unattached to pleasant feelings.
