Excerpt from Fascicle Six of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra

Original text:云何贼人。假我衣服。裨贩如来。造种种业。皆言佛法。却非出家。具戒比丘。为小乘道。由是疑误。无量众生。堕无间狱。

Explanation: How do those thieves act? They use My name to peddle and trade on the Tathāgata, declaring what was not spoken by the Tathāgata to be spoken by the Tathāgata, and declaring what was spoken by the Tathāgata to be not spoken by the Tathāgata—presenting Dharma as non-Dharma and non-Dharma as Dharma—thereby committing all kinds of evil karma. These thieves all claim that the Buddha-Dharma is not to be cultivated by those who have left home, that those who have left home cannot attain buddhahood, that the Buddha-Dharma need not be practiced by leaving home, and that those monastics who have received the full precepts are all of Hīnayāna faculties, capable only of cultivating the Hīnayāna path and unable to become Buddhas. After the thieves speak in this way, they mislead countless sentient beings, causing countless sentient beings to commit the karmic offense of slandering monastics and the karmic offense of slandering the Buddha, and thus, upon death, they fall into the Avīci hell.
