Since beginningless kalpas, the mental faculty has coexisted with the eighth consciousness, without any point of origin. At that time, the mental faculty was characterized by ignorance, and thus coexisted with the eighth consciousness, leading to the activation of ignorance. This prompted the eighth consciousness to give rise to the three realms of existence and the body of five aggregates. If the mental faculty had been free from ignorance, it would not have existed since beginningless kalpas; only the eighth consciousness would have remained. This is the state of nirvana without residue, and this nirvana without residue would have endured eternally. The mental faculty would never again have arisen from within this nirvana without residue, and consequently, the body of five aggregates would not have been born. That state is the original state of Buddhahood; hence it is said that sentient beings are originally Buddhas, and that mind itself is Buddha. However, the actual situation is not so. The eighth consciousness has given birth to sentient beings, thus establishing a profound connection among the mind, the Buddha, and sentient beings at the point of the eighth consciousness. The eighth consciousness is one; it has no distinction within itself, sharing the same essential nature.
