The Division of Labor between Manas and Mind Consciousness

Armchair strategizing is the affair of the mind consciousness, while actual combat is the affair of the manas; studying theory to understand principles is the affair of the mind consciousness, while actual operation is the affair of the manas; learning and researching chess methods is the affair of the mind consciousness, while facing off on the chessboard is the affair of the manas; studying musical scores is the affair of the mind consciousness, while performing on stage is the affair of the manas; learning the art of painting is the affair of the mind consciousness, while producing a painting is the affair of the manas; studying finance is the affair of the mind consciousness, while becoming a financier is the affair of the manas; learning a chef's pastry theory is the affair of the mind consciousness, while becoming a cook who stir-fries dishes and prepares meals is the affair of the manas; learning driving skills is the affair of the mind consciousness, while driving on the road is the affair of the manas; studying knowledge of mathematics, physics, and chemistry is the affair of the mind consciousness, while applying it in actual work is the affair of the manas; studying medical theory is the affair of the mind consciousness, while treating illness and saving lives is the affair of the manas; learning agricultural techniques is the affair of the mind consciousness, while farming in the fields is the affair of the manas; studying architectural design is the affair of the mind consciousness, while actually drafting blueprints and constructing buildings is the affair of the manas; studying politics is the affair of the mind consciousness, while becoming a leader and a statesman is the affair of the manas; studying the Buddha-dharma is the affair of the mind consciousness, while realizing enlightenment and becoming a Buddha is the affair of the manas. How the mind consciousness and the manas divide the labor and cooperate, each performing its own duties, is a matter of precepts, meditative concentration (samādhi), and wisdom, and is also a considerable field of learning.
