All Things in Heaven and Earth—To Take Any of Them Is Theft

All things in heaven and earth—taking them is stealing; all feeling is karmic action, all bearing the fruits of birth and death, differing only in the weight and the wholesomeness or unwholesomeness of the karmic action. Whether wholesome or unwholesome, as long as it is a conditioned dharma, it will inevitably summon the suffering of birth and death. Because among all things in heaven and earth, not a single one belongs to you—including your physical body and your conscious mind—all of them are stolen from the tathāgatagarbha. Only after completely eliminating self-view (ātma-dṛṣṭi) will one no longer violate the precept against stealing; only by not violating the precept against stealing can one become a Buddha.
