These afflictions can only be eliminated after attaining the fruition stage, when the first dhyana arises and one becomes a third-stage sage. First, greed is eradicated, followed by hatred; at the fourth fruition stage, self-attachment and self-conceit are severed. First and second fruition practitioners merely subdue afflictions—coarse afflictions do not manifest, but subtle afflictions may occasionally arise. In the ordinary state prior to severing the view of self, one can only suppress afflictions, and sometimes even this suppression fails. Those who possess the first dhyana or higher can also suppress and subdue afflictions, but cannot eradicate them. Although fourth-stage Arhats have eliminated afflictions, their habitual tendencies may occasionally manifest, sometimes beyond their control or awareness, requiring others to remind them.
