The Principle of Mitigated Retribution for Heavy Karma

Experiencing the karmic retribution for future transgressions in this present life constitutes a mitigation of heavy offenses. The more diligently one cultivates, the sooner karmic retribution manifests, resulting in reduced karmic interest. This is profoundly advantageous.

If you encounter a car accident in this life, you should think: How fortunate! This means I will not have to endure hellish retribution in future lives, nor face sudden untimely death or a shortened lifespan. If someone makes things difficult for you, wrongs you, subjects you to injustice, or verbally and physically abuses you, you should reflect thus: This person is truly doing me a great kindness. Through this, I will avoid contracting serious illnesses like cancer, escaping car accidents and other calamities in the future. Such karmic offenses are thus resolved. What a bargain.

The minor setbacks encountered through spiritual practice in this life avert major catastrophes in future lives. The significant adversities faced due to present cultivation prevent even greater future misfortunes—such as perils, sufferings, illnesses, untimely death, and retribution in the Three Evil Realms. This is exceedingly worthwhile. Therefore, regardless of circumstances, persist diligently in your efforts to cultivate and follow the path.
