Neither in the state of thought-extinguishing samadhi nor during deep sleep do the six consciousnesses exist. When thoughts involving the six consciousnesses arise again, it must be due to the manas generating attention and the volitional mental factor toward the objects of the six dusts, desiring to discriminate them. Only then does the eighth consciousness give rise to the six consciousnesses to discriminate the six dusts. Consequently, one emerges from samadhi or awakens from sleep.
