The Relationship Between Dhyāna and Sambodhi

Only when the manas is capable of contemplation and investigation can one attain enlightenment. For the manas to engage in the investigation of the Dharma principles, meditative concentration is essential, so that the principles can penetrate to the manas; without meditative concentration, the manas remains powerless. If one attempts to engage in contemplative practice without meditative concentration, it amounts to mere speculation and emotional conjecture—the outcome of which is well known. Therefore, the relationship between meditative concentration and enlightenment, as well as the connection between the manas and enlightenment, must be thoroughly understood and clarified before one can begin earnest practice in Chan meditation.
