Dharma Teachings

What Is the Meaning of Existence in the Illusory World?

Buddhists can utilize this world for spiritual practice; sentient beings undergo karmic retribution within this realm, and beyond that, it holds no other significance.

Though we are clearly confronted with nothing but electrical signals, we interpret them as a vibrant and dazzling world of the six dusts. Those electrical signals are not inherently real either—they are illusions conjured by unseen and intangible seeds. In truth, nothing exists within this world, nor does the world itself. Sentient beings, afflicted with an eye disease, stubbornly perceive the world and all dharmas within it.

The world and all dharmas within it possess meaning if you deem them meaningful, and lack meaning if you deem them meaningless. Dharmas are devoid of mind; objects are devoid of mind; scenes are devoid of mind; the world is devoid of mind. It is sentient beings who possess a mind, assigning whatever meaning they choose to a scene—thus the scene acquires that meaning. They assign whatever meaning they choose to the world—thus the world becomes that meaning. If you were devoid of mind, there would be no world; with a mind, all dharmas come into existence.
