Who Is the Master of Abiding in the Self-Nature of Suchness?

The so-called reliance means dependence, just like seeking shelter under a great tree because one knows the tree is sturdy, providing shelter from wind and rain, shielding from the scorching sun, and offering a place for the body to rest. At the same time, one must know the location of the tree to approach it, leaning against it to sit or lie down. It is also like depending on a great mountain to live, because one knows that within the mountain there are various edible plants and game to eat, trees to build houses, and firewood to cook meals. One must also know the mountain's terrain, topography, altitude, and other information to journey to the mountain and establish a home and livelihood.

All operations of any matter are governed by the mind consciousness (manas), which is the supreme commander and regulator. Naturally, the practice of relying on Suchness (Tathatā) is also like this, without exception. Therefore, before relying on Suchness, the mind consciousness must understand the nature and characteristics of Suchness and know the whereabouts of Suchness. Only then can it adjust one's body and mind according to the nature of Suchness, direct the mind’s activities toward Suchness, eliminate various defilements, and gradually transform toward purity and non-action. In this way, the mind consciousness must realize the self-nature of Suchness before one can speak of relying on, depending on, and directing oneself toward it. If one does not realize Suchness, one cannot direct oneself toward Suchness, just as a blind person cannot see the sun. Therefore, even if the mental consciousness attains fruition or comprehends the mind, it remains no different from a blind person, unable to direct itself toward non-action or to empty the mind.
