(2) Original text: 如是生有。取爱受触。六入处名色。为自作。为他作。为自他作。为非自他无因作。答言尊者舍利弗。名色非自作。非他作。非自他作。非非自他作无因作。然彼名色缘识生。

Explanation: Śāriputra asked further: Likewise, birth, existence (bhava), grasping, craving, feeling, contact, the six sense bases, and name-and-form—are these phenomena arising naturally by themselves, or are they created by relying on other conditions and other causes? Or are they created by the combination of what is natural and other conditions? Or are they neither created by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor do they appear without cause or condition? Kauṣṭhila replied to Śāriputra: The phenomenon of birth does not arise naturally by itself, is not created by relying on other conditions, nor is it created by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it does not arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it arise without cause or condition; rather, because of existence in the three realms, the phenomenon of birth appears.

Existence in the three realms does not arise naturally by itself, nor does it exist by relying on other conditions, nor does it arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it does not arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it arise without cause or condition; rather, because of grasping, existence in the three realms appears. The phenomenon of grasping does not arise naturally by itself, is not created by relying on other conditions, nor does it arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it does not arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it arise without cause or condition; rather, because of craving, the phenomenon of grasping is produced. Craving that is not relinquished does not arise naturally by itself, nor is it produced by relying on other conditions, nor is it produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it is not produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it appear without cause or condition; rather, because of feeling, craving is produced.

Feeling does not arise naturally by itself, nor is it born by relying on other conditions, nor does it appear from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it is not produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it appear without cause or condition; rather, because of contact, feeling is produced. Contact does not arise naturally by itself, does not appear by relying on other conditions, nor is it produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it does not arise from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor does it appear without cause or condition; rather, because of the six sense bases, contact is produced.

The six sense bases do not arise naturally by themselves, are not born by relying on other conditions, nor are they created by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that they are not produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor do they appear without cause or condition; rather, because of name-and-form, the six sense bases appear. Name-and-form does not arise naturally by itself, is not produced by relying on other conditions, nor is it born from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that it is not produced by the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it born without cause or condition; rather, because of the six consciousnesses, name-and-form is produced.

Explanation: Śāriputra asked further: Does that sixfold consciousness arise naturally by itself, or is it produced by relying on other conditions? Or is it created by the combination of what is natural and other conditions? Or is it neither natural nor dependent on other conditions, being produced without cause or condition? Kauṣṭhila replied: The six consciousnesses do not arise naturally by themselves, do not exist merely by relying on other conditions, nor are they born from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor is it that they are not born from the combination of what is natural and other conditions, nor are they produced without cause or condition; rather, because there is name-and-form, the six consciousnesses are produced.
