Saṃyukta Āgama (291) Part 5

(5) Original text:

Explanation: Thus, śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, with regard to desirable and lovely forms in the world, contemplate them as if they were an illness, as if they were an abscess, as if they were a thorn, as if they were a killer, contemplating their impermanent, suffering, empty, and not-self nature; in this way they will become far removed from craving and attachment, and will be liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and distress. Therefore, Ānanda, with regard to this dharma of inner contact, one should see it thus, hear it thus, be aware of it thus, and know it thus; likewise, one should treat the inner contact of the past and the future in this way, contemplating it thus. Through contemplating again and again, one finally realizes that all dharmas are impermanent, suffering, empty, and not-self; then one no longer craves and grasps, and birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and distress cease, and the mind attains liberation, coolness, and tranquility.
