Explanation: If a person of intelligence and wisdom is obscured by ignorance, and the condition of craving binds this body of consciousness, then there is internally the body of consciousness and externally nāma-rūpa (name-and-form), the five aggregates. When these two come together in contact, there arise the six bases of contact. Because there is contact at these six bases, a person of intelligence and wisdom gives rise to feelings of suffering and happiness, and from these conditions various feelings arise. What are the six bases of contact? They are the eye-contact base, the ear-contact base, the nose-contact base, the tongue-contact base, the body-contact base, and the mind-contact base. Both the foolish worldling and the person of intelligence and wisdom experience various feelings such as suffering and happiness at the six contact bases, and both cultivate the holy life with me—so what is the difference between them? The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, You are the root of the Dharma, the eye of the Dharma, the reliance of the Dharma. Excellent, World-Honored One! We only wish that You would expound this meaning. Having heard it, we bhikṣus shall accept and practice it in accordance."
Original text:
Explanation: The World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "Listen carefully and contemplate well; I shall now explain it to you. Bhikṣus, the foolish worldlings of little learning, being obscured by ignorance and bound by the conditions of craving, obtain this body of consciousness. Because their ignorance is not severed and the conditions of craving are not exhausted, when the body breaks up and life ends, they again take up a body. Because they again take up a body, they cannot be liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and distress. Why is this so? Because these foolish worldlings fundamentally do not cultivate the pure holy life, do not aim at the right exhaustion of suffering, and do not reach the ultimate edge of suffering. Therefore, when the body breaks up and life ends, they again take up a body. Because they again take up a body, when the body breaks up and life ends, they cannot attain liberation from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and distress."
