(1) Original text:
Explanation: The World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not truly and realistically understand the Dharma, do not truly understand the arising and ceasing of the Dharma, and do not truly understand the path to be cultivated for the cessation of the Dharma, then they are not śramaṇas and are not counted among śramaṇas; they are not brāhmaṇas and are not counted among brāhmaṇas. Nor are they true śramaṇas or genuine brāhmaṇas; they have not seen the Dharma and known for themselves, realizing it through their own body: "Birth for me has been exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that there will be no further existence."
Original text:
Explanation: What Dharma is not truly known? Of what Dharma is the arising not truly known? Of what Dharma is the ceasing not truly known? Of what is the path of cultivation for the cessation of the Dharma not truly known? It means not truly knowing the Dharma of aging-and-death, not truly knowing the arising and ceasing of aging-and-death, and not truly knowing the path of cultivation for the cessation of aging-and-death. Likewise, one does not truly know the Dharmas of birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana); one does not truly know the arising of the Dharmas of birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases; one does not truly know the ceasing of the Dharmas of birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases; and one does not truly know the path for the cessation of the Dharmas of birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, and the six sense bases. In the same way, one does not truly know all dharmas, does not truly know the arising of all dharmas, does not truly know the ceasing of all dharmas, and does not truly know the path for the cessation of all dharmas.
