Saṃyuktāgama Sūtra (368)

Original text:

Explanation: The World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: You should cultivate immeasurable meditative absorption (samādhi), and within meditative concentration, single-mindedly and diligently bind your mindfulness to the Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination. After diligently binding your mindfulness to the Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination within immeasurable meditative concentration, the meaning of the Dharma can then manifest in the mind as it truly is. How does it manifest as it truly is? The dharma of aging-and-death manifests in the mind as it truly is — the phenomenon of aging-and-death, the causes of aging-and-death, the conditions of aging-and-death, how aging-and-death arises, how aging-and-death ceases, and the Noble Eightfold Path cultivated to extinguish aging-and-death — all manifest as they truly are, and the mind becomes very clear about them. And so on down to the dharmas of birth, existence, grasping, craving, feeling, contact, the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana), name-and-form, the six consciousnesses, and volitional formations — each of these dharmas manifests in the mind in turn: the phenomena of these dharmas, the causes and conditions that produce these dharmas, how these dharmas arise, how they cease, and the Noble Eightfold Path cultivated to extinguish these dharmas — all manifest in the mind as they truly are. These dharmas are all impermanent; they are all conditioned and tainted dharmas. If this principle can manifest in the mind in such a way as it truly is, one will attain the great wisdom of liberation.

"As it truly is" means the inherent state of the dharma — its true state, unknown to people — not the surface phenomena commonly known to all, but rather its nature as subject to arising and ceasing, change, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self. When the mind can manifest the dharma in this way, wisdom arises in an instant, and the mind abides in the realm of liberation.
