Eradicating the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi-prahāṇa) requires evidence, and the evidence must be conclusive. The habitual tendencies of the manas should not be too heavy, and its ignorance must not be too deep and severe. If the manas is extremely ignorant and deluded, then even when all the evidence is laid out and the evidence is conclusive, the manas will still cling to its original stubborn views, and the view of self cannot be eradicated. The continuous process of contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā) and deliberation by the mind consciousness is precisely the process of continually reversing the ignorance and delusion of the manas. Only when the manas's ignorance has become somewhat lighter will it be willing to acknowledge the facts; otherwise, even with the facts plainly laid out before it, it is of no use.
