What Is the Tolerance of Non-Arising of Dharmas (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti)

The patience with the non-arising of dharmas is the wisdom that arises when a bodhisattva, after seeing the true mind and awakening to self-nature, cultivates to the stage of a first-bhūmi bodhisattva and realizes the path of seeing. At the moment of first seeing the true mind, one attains the patience with non-arising: the tathāgatagarbha neither arises nor ceases and has never been born, while the five aggregates of body and mind are illusorily manifested by the tathāgatagarbha—arising in appearance, yet in reality non-arising.

When one cultivates to the first bhūmi, one obtains the wisdom of the patience with the non-arising of dharmas: not only are the five aggregates non-arising and the tathāgatagarbha non-arising, but everything in the world is non-arising. This wisdom is extremely vast and is called the seed-wisdom of consciousness-only (yogācāra). All dharmas in the world, all marks, are produced by the tathāgatagarbha and have no self-nature of their own—arising in appearance, yet in essence non-arising; all are of the nature of the tathāgatagarbha, just as all gold ornaments are of the nature of gold.
