Explanation: Question: What causes and conditions lead to the fact that, in the reverse sequence of contemplating dependent arising, aging-and-death is taken first when expounding the twelve links of dependent arising? Answer: This is because it rests upon the principle of the Four Noble Truths as proclaimed by the World-Honored One, for birth and aging-and-death can reveal the truth of suffering, just as the World-Honored One said that the cessation of the new nāma-rūpa is the foremost dharma.
Question: Why is it not said that the cessation of all ignorance is the foremost dharma? Answer: The cessation of ignorance as foremost is established with reference to those who have attained liberation of mind; the causes and conditions of the truth of suffering are established through the cessation of aging-and-death of nāma-rūpa. Because, within presently existing dharmas, there is the suffering of seeds as well as future suffering fruits, and these suffering fruits cease without being born, it is said that the reverse sequence of dependent arising takes nāma-rūpa as first and feeling as last, so that nāma-rūpa can cease ultimately. Within presently existing dharmas, when experiencing the various feelings, craving and the latent tendencies of craving can be forever uprooted and no longer arise; this is called cessation. Because of the cessation of craving, with craving as first, the other links also subsequently cease. In cultivating the dharma of dependent arising, one should understand the sequence of expounding dependent arising in this way.

Explanation: Question: Why is dependent arising spoken of as dependent arising? Answer: Because, bound by afflictions, one transmigrates to the various destinies and repeatedly gives rise to the aggregates of the five aggregates, it is called dependent arising; this is the name derived from the meaning of the words. Furthermore, the body of the five aggregates relies upon numerous causes and conditions, and after swiftly passing away and ceasing, it is born again through the continued conjunction of conditions; therefore it is called dependent arising; this is the explanation of the name according to the meaning of the moment (kṣaṇa) of arising and ceasing. Furthermore, although the numerous causes and conditions have passed away, the body of the five aggregates is not abandoned, and it arises again relying upon its own continuity of conditions; therefore it is called dependent arising. This is what is said: "When this exists, that exists; when this arises, that arises, and nothing else." One should know that the name is explained according to this meaning.
Furthermore, the body of the five aggregates passes away countless times and arises in continuity countless times; this is called dependent arising; this is the explanation of the name according to the meaning of repeated destruction and repeated cessation of the body of the five aggregates. Furthermore, in past ages, having awakened to the nature of the dependent arising of the world of the five aggregates, the characteristics of the five-aggregate body arose in continuous succession; therefore it is called dependent arising. As the World-Honored One said: "I have already awakened, and I arose uprightly to proclaim the dharma of dependent arising." It is precisely because of this name of dependent arising that it is spoken of as dependent arising.
