Explanation: Question: How can one know that all the volitional formations of the manas are the three kinds of conditions for the arising of the six consciousnesses? Answer: First, because the volitional formations of the manas can perfume and elicit the seeds of the six consciousnesses, the volitional formations are said to be the simultaneous condition (sahabhū-pratyaya) of the consciousnesses; the arising of the six consciousnesses cannot be separated from the volitional formations of the manas. Second, because of the impelling force and operation of the manas's volitional formations, they become the condition of immediate cessation and arising for the uninterrupted arising of the six consciousnesses. Third, because the future-life retributive results of the six consciousnesses can come into being, the volitional formations of the manas become the initiating cause (pravartaka-hetu) for the six consciousnesses to cease long afterward. Such is the case of volitional formations conditioning consciousness; likewise, consciousness conditioning name-and-form, name-and-form conditioning the six sense bases (ṣaḍāyatana), the six sense bases conditioning contact, and contact conditioning feeling are all the same.

Explanation: Question: How can one know that feeling conditions craving as three kinds of conditions? Answer: One should know that because the mind gives rise to delight and attachment at the time of feeling, feeling becomes the simultaneous condition for the arising of craving, and from then on craving continues without interruption. Because of the impelling force of craving, mental actions such as pursuit arise. Because of the impelling force of feeling, mental actions such as pursuit arise; because feeling's function operates, it becomes the condition of immediate cessation and arising for craving. The feeling of future lives arises continuously and is difficult to be liberated from; because feeling continues without interruption, it becomes the initiating cause for craving to cease far in the future.
