Question: In the past, when I felt fear, apprehension, or anxiety in my heart, I always sensed that something was about to happen, though I didn't know what. My mind was unsettled, and eventually, something did occur. Is this the manas knowing in advance?
Answer: These mental states are the emotions of the manas. The manas can foreknow many things; it knows almost everything. However, it cannot personally handle matters itself. It only possesses an alerting function, allowing the consciousness to become aware so that it can take action, plan, and arrange accordingly. The manas feels anxious about what is about to happen but does not know how to express it to make the consciousness aware. Only after the event occurs does the consciousness learn what it was, but often it is already too late, rendering the knowledge useless. Sometimes, events dreamt about in sleep are also matters the manas is concerned with, and it seeks to alert the consciousness to become aware. Subsequently, the events from the dream indeed occur. This is the alerting function of the manas, also known as a precognitive dream.
Because the consciousness is intelligent, wise, and possesses analytical and reasoning abilities, it can devise solutions to problems and can take measures and actions. When the manas foreknows that something is about to happen, it uses various methods to alert and remind the consciousness. Once the consciousness receives this alert and suggestion, it may comprehend what might occur and prepare in advance. If the manas possesses the wisdom to alert the consciousness, it can make it easier for the consciousness to comprehend.
