While the mother was doing needlework at home, her child encountered an accident outside. At that very moment, the needle suddenly pricked the mother's hand, causing it to bleed. The mother immediately sensed that something had happened to her child. Alternatively, if the mother encountered an incident, the child might suddenly have an intuition and know that the mother was in trouble.
This principle arises because the two individuals share not only a blood relationship but also a deep karmic connection. This relationship is essentially a connection between their manas (the mental faculty), and the karmic bond is likewise a connection between their manas. Due to experiences accumulated over countless kalpas, the manas is exceedingly perceptive; thus, it maintains mutual awareness. Once something happens to one party, the other immediately perceives it. Why is this so? Because the manas, following the all-knowing alaya-consciousness, continuously focuses on matters of deep concern. When something significant occurs to the other party, the alaya-consciousness transmits that information in accordance with the manas' focus, and the manas becomes aware. It then finds a way to inform the conscious mind so that it can respond accordingly. If the manas does not inform the conscious mind, it cannot handle the matter itself.
