Many people diligently study the Dharma teachings every day—one could say they are conscientious and devoted—yet occasionally, when encountering speech that slanders the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, they give it a word of praise. That single "like" destroys most of the merit and virtue accumulated through their practice, so that no matter how diligent they are, their progress remains slight. Ignorance can severely obstruct the cultivation of the Path. If one does not find a way to repent of one's own ignorance, then in the end whether one's wholesome karma outweighs one's unwholesome karma is hard to say. Why do so many people not realize how heavy their own ignorance is? Why do they not realize that they lack wisdom, yet insist on voicing their ignorant, unwise opinions on the crucial points of the Buddha's teachings? What will be the final outcome of such practice—why does no one stop to think about it? What is called unwholesome karma? Slandering the Three Jewels is the worst of the worst—is there anything more evil than this? It would be better to commit the unwholesome deed of killing, for its retribution would still be smaller.
Creating unwholesome karma is very easy: a single sentence can complete an unwholesome deed, even a single word can complete a great unwholesome deed, and even an emoji or a symbol can produce unwholesome karma. Few people would feel there is anything wrong with this, or that it carries any evil consequence. When the evil retribution arrives, they will not even connect it to its cause, will not think about or analyze the source of the evil fruit, much less repent of the unwholesome bodily, verbal, and mental actions they have committed. Many people do not even know what kinds of bodily, verbal, and mental actions are wholesome and what kinds are unwholesome. Generally, they simply follow along with the ignorance and afflictions in their own minds, never going against their own unwholesome mental factors, letting their afflictive habits be revealed and spread freely. Most people have very poor capacity for awakening: they are unaware of their own mental activities, lack the power of introspection, and do not wish to introspect; they merely indulge and shield themselves. What is the result of such indulgence? The result is that everyone has afflictions and suffering, has obstructions, finds nothing going their way, and at death will fall into the three evil destinies to undergo immense suffering. After emerging from the three evil destinies, they still do not awaken, so that the vicious cycle continues endlessly, and the wheel of the six destinies keeps turning without cease.
Creating wholesome karma is actually also very easy: a single sentence can complete a wholesome deed, even a single word can complete a wholesome deed, and even an emoji or a symbol can complete a wholesome deed. Yet many people disdain to perform such wholesome deeds, because they lack such a habit. Every day, unwholesome mental factors manifest more and more than wholesome mental factors, so for everyone unwholesome karma outweighs and outnumbers wholesome karma. This is why, although many people have taken faith in the Buddha and study Buddhism, they still fall into the three evil destinies at death and cannot secure a human rebirth. The proportion who go to the three evil destinies is over ninety percent, or even more.
