How does the mind consciousness perfume the manas? The mind consciousness must attend to all matters and principles with proper attention (yoniśo-manaskāra), contemplating them correctly and contemplating them well. At the same time, this allows the manas to understand correct principles, and gradually the manas can come to accord with correct principles—this is called perfuming the manas. The mind consciousness must deliberate; without deliberation it cannot perfume the manas. When the mind consciousness frequently contemplates a certain principle, allowing the manas to follow and accord with it, then after being perfumed, the manas can also form new habitual tendencies, and old, unwholesome habitual dispositions are thereby transformed.
