He who wins the people's hearts gains the world; he who loses the people's hearts loses the world. Therefore, no one should make enemies of the entire world or oppose anyone. The power of a single person's manas (mental faculty) may be weak, but the combined power of many people's manas becomes immense, and those targeted by hostility will surely suffer. As the saying goes, "The spittle of the masses can drown a person"—this illustrates the principle. The manas of a spiritual practitioner possesses greater power than that of an ordinary person; the manas of one with meditative concentration is stronger than that of an ordinary person; the manas of an upright-hearted individual wields greater power than that of an ordinary person; the manas of one with vast virtuous karma holds greater power than that of an ordinary person. Thus, opposing those who genuinely practice, or opposing the upright and virtuous, is unwise. To refrain from such opposition is the way of the wise.
