Several Circumstances in Which Meditative Concentration Arises

There are many types of meditative concentration (samādhi), and its states are also numerous. Sometimes meditative concentration arises while contemplating the Buddha's teachings; sometimes it arises when one has a strong, profound feeling toward the Buddha's teachings; sometimes it arises when the mind is very tranquil; sometimes concentration arises quite inadvertently; sometimes concentration arises when one is extremely angry and irritated; and sometimes concentration arises when one is in great pain. In short, as long as one's full attention is concentrated, regarding the matter as especially important, unable to attend to anything else, with no thought for anything beside—then meditative concentration can arise.
