Why is the mental faculty able to take measures in emergency situations to avoid danger, turning peril into safety? How does the mental faculty know that the encountered situation is dangerous and potentially harmful to one's life? How does the mental faculty discern and judge that an accident is about to occur?
First, it must be clarified that consciousness absolutely has no time to carefully analyze the danger of the situation, how to evade it, or what measures to take. Moreover, most of the time, only after the event has occurred and the risk has passed does consciousness realize what exactly happened, recognizing how perilous the situation was. Then, instead of thanking God, people often thank some deity, unaware that they should foremost express gratitude to the mental faculty. So, what should we thank the mental faculty for?
The mental faculty, since beginningless time, has experienced countless events. It knows what is beneficial and what is harmful, what can endanger life. It has also, life after life, relied on the eighth consciousness to connect with the physical body, understanding the general condition of the body, knowing which parts are vital and relate to the life faculty. Therefore, the mental faculty often, at critical moments, without waiting for consciousness to analyze and judge, independently handles various sudden, urgent, and significant incidents, preventing accidents and safeguarding life.
When various emergencies occur, if the mental faculty were to wait for consciousness to analyze, contemplate, reason, and judge before considering how to resolve and handle the situation, it would already be too late, and life might be lost. Thus, we should express gratitude for the mental faculty's alertness, for its invaluable experiences since beginningless time, for its decisive and resourceful decisiveness that brooks no argument, and for its automated wisdom in avoiding danger. Therefore, let us no longer say that the mental faculty is always so foolish, so stupid—in its moments of alertness, we are far from matching it.
