Dharma Teachings

The Dharma is only useful when it has been permeated into the manas.

Before attaining realization of the fruits, the Buddha's teachings must also be steeped into the manas. When the manas is cultivated by wholesome dharmas, it will undergo change, and both body and mind will transform—all the more so at the very moment of realizing the fruit; that is what is called the power of meditative absorption (samādhi). If, in the process of studying the Buddha's teachings, nothing is steeped into the manas, and there is only the mind consciousness's absorption and understanding of knowledge, then the manas will remain as it has always been, and there will be no transformation of body, mind, and world. In that case, the eradication of the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi-prahāṇa) and the realization of the fruits would be indefinitely far off. Even before attaining realization of the fruits, if the manas has been cultivated but not to a sufficient degree, one still cannot eradicate the view of self and realize the fruits. Therefore, the transformation of body and mind, the transformation of bodily, verbal, and mental actions, as well as the eradication of the view of self and the enlightenment of seeing the mind and seeing one's nature, all require the manas to be steeped and dyed to a considerable degree; it is not enough for the manas to change only a little. To be reborn completely—transformed from the very bones—one must thoroughly transform the manas, eliminate the manas's afflictive defilements that stain the mind, and sever the afflictions of the five grades of contemplative defilements (bhāvanā-kleśa) of the desire realm. Only in this way, when the karmic seeds are stored in the eighth consciousness, can one be assured in future lives of not falling into the three evil destinies, but instead being reborn in the wholesome destinies of humans and gods. There are still others who cling stubbornly to the attitude that the mind consciousness can realize the fruits, contending against the notion that it is the manas that realizes the fruits, resisting obstinately and refusing to change, stubborn to the very end—truly beyond remedy.
