The essence of the sixth and seventh consciousnesses is the eighth consciousness, just as the essence of bread is flour (that one now is precisely me). But the eighth consciousness is not the sixth and seventh consciousnesses, just as flour is not bread (I now am not that one). The discernment of the sixth and seventh consciousnesses is in substance the discernment of the eighth consciousness, yet the discernment of the eighth consciousness is not the discernment of the sixth and seventh consciousnesses—their objects, contents, and mental activities differ. The eighth consciousness takes what it knows and then transforms it into images, and only then can the seventh consciousness know it; the content has undergone alteration, and they are not dharmas on the same level.
