The Ignorance and Transgressions of Manas

The ignorance of the manas is not due to the consciousness lacking wisdom; rather, it is precisely because of the ignorance of the manas that consciousness lacks wisdom. Therefore, the one who ties the bell is not consciousness, though untying it requires consciousness to do so. The ignorance of the manas has existed since beginningless time and has never been illuminated. In the very beginning, there was only the Tathagatagarbha and the manas, without consciousness. How, then, could the ignorance of the manas be the fault of consciousness? The ignorance of consciousness is precisely the fault of the manas.
