Commentary on the Sutra of the Father and Son Anthology (195)

The Ten Kinds of Body, Speech, and Mind Karmic Actions Arising and Ceasing Instantly

The Buddha said to the king, "Indeed, indeed. Ignorant and unlearned ordinary sentient beings, with minds attached to all dharmas, arise a mind of attachment and defilement, and create such foolish karma. There are three kinds of body karma, four kinds of speech karma, and three kinds of mind karma. Creating those karmas, they instantly change and cease. This karma having ceased, it does not abide in the east, south, west, north, the four directions, up, down, or in the middle. At the time of death, one sees what was previously done, one's own karmic retribution appears in the mind, like a person waking from a dream recalling the things in the dream."

The Buddha said to the king, "Truly so. Ignorant and narrow-minded ordinary sentient beings, with minds attached to all dharmas, constantly arise a mind of greed, attachment, and defilement, and create karmic actions similar to such foolishness. They can create three kinds in body karma, four kinds in speech karma, and will create three kinds in mind karma. When creating various karmic actions, these karmic actions all instantly disappear and cease. After the karmic actions cease, they do not abide in the east, south, west, north, the four directions, up, down, or in the middle. When approaching the end of life, one will see the karmic retribution caused by one's previously created karmic actions appear in the mind, like a person after waking from a dream still recalling the things in the dream."
