How to Distance Oneself from False Appearances and Discover the True Reality

Discovering the truth means that the manas must discover the true reality of the dharma realm; only when the manas realizes it can one then depart from false appearances. Only the manas can direct the six consciousnesses to not accept false appearances and to depart from false appearances; the conscious mind has no such authority. Once the manas realizes that appearances are false, it can simultaneously exercise mastery to depart from false appearances. If only the consciousness realizes it, it is useless: the manas is together with false appearances at every moment, every second, every instant—how could the consciousness ever depart from false appearances?

The manas is like a hitching post for a horse: even if the consciousness is allowed to run here and there, it must still run around the post of the manas and is not permitted to run far. If the manas hitching post keeps moving and shifting about everywhere, can the wild horses of the six consciousnesses remain fixed in one place without moving or turning according to the manas?
