Perfect Penetration of the Six Sense Faculties

Rising in the morning to sit in stillness; drum sounds, wind sounds, chanting sounds, birdsong—sound after sound enters the ears, yet the mind is cut off from the dusty world, without a single ripple.
Thoughts arise again: the world, nation and family, sentient beings, spreading the Dharma and delivering the multitude—matter after matter surfaces, yet the mind departs from all marks, not even a small wave stirs.

Worldly human affairs—frogs croaking, cicadas clamoring, ants battling, bees contending—are merely to win a laugh from others; apart from death there is no great matter. Yet even birth and death are no great matter: bubbles arising and bursting, all empty illusion.
As for supramundane matters—liberation from all suffering, spreading the Dharma to benefit beings—one must not take them too seriously; they are all affairs within a dream. Fame and gain, praise and blame, honor and ridicule, vows and responsibilities—nothing but empty marks.

All sounds are like footsteps echoing in an empty valley—grasp none of them; all forms and marks are like mirages—attach to none of them; all affairs and principles are like a tortoise's hair or a rabbit's horns—cling to none of them. The world's coercion and enticement are all traps; the world's bustling splendor is all thorns; speech, laughter, talk, silence, raising a hand or moving a foot—all volitional fabrications are bitter karma. When the six faculties face their objects—sounds, sights, sensual pleasures—if one clings to even a hair's breadth, it is arsenic entering the mouth.

The three—eye, form, and seeing—are empty; the three—ear, sound, and hearing—are empty; the three—nose, scent, and smelling—are empty; the three—tongue, taste, and tasting—are empty; the three—body, touch, and feeling—are empty; the three—mind, dharma, and thinking—are empty. The subject is empty, the object is empty; the emptiness in the mind is also empty, and that empty emptiness is also empty—until there is not a hair to be established, not a mote of dust to be obtained. Not established, yet also no "not established"; not obtained, yet also no "not obtained"; neither establishing nor demolishing, neither gaining nor losing—only then is there the message of having arrived home. The home has no four walls and not an inch of grass, nor even a spot of ground to stand an awl; ultimately not a mote of dust—and not even that "not a mote of dust"—and even "no" is no more. For one who reaches this, how could it stop at the ear faculty being perfectly penetrated? The eye faculty is perfectly penetrated, the nose faculty perfectly penetrated, the tongue faculty perfectly penetrated, the body faculty perfectly penetrated, and the mind faculty too is perfectly penetrated—all six faculties are perfectly penetrated. Penetrated into what? Investigate!
