The contemplation of dharmas by consciousness forms one's own thoughts, concepts, views, and understandings. This permeates the manas (root consciousness). Only when consciousness contemplates with focused attention can the permeation become effective, drawing the attention and proper regard of the manas, which constitutes the initial effect. When the manas gives rise to alertness and contemplation, the effect becomes more pronounced. When the manas contemplates with focus, depth, and in accordance with truth, the permeation becomes even more evident. Once the manas gains a clear thread in its contemplation, the effect manifests. When the manas discerns the meaning of the dharma and makes an initial determination, the true effect emerges. When the manas arrives at a very clear and truthful conclusion, firmly affirms its own contemplation, and makes corresponding determinations and judgments, it can be said that the permeation is successful. The manas is transformed. Thereafter, all mental activities will change, revolving around the judgments and determinations of the manas. This signifies that the permeation has fully taken hold.
