To eliminate the parikalpita nature (imputed nature) of the manas, one should first understand clearly why the manas has this parikalpita nature. Because the manas does not understand the true reality of the dharmadhātu and does not understand the essence of all dharmas, it mistakenly grasps all dharmas as real, as self, and as belonging to self, universally deliberating upon and clinging to all dharmas. If the true essence of all dharmas can be revealed, and the manas comes to understand the real nature of all dharmas, then what would there still be for Him to cling to or calculate about? The parikalpita nature will thus gradually be eliminated, and in this way the fundamental problem is resolved. If the manas does not realize the dharma and does not understand the essence of dharmas, how could it ever eliminate ignorance and exhaust the parikalpita nature? All the dharmas that the mind consciousness cultivates through permeation, and all the dharmas it comes to understand and realize, have as their fundamental purpose the realization by the manas, so as to eliminate the manas's ignorance; only then can one turn the tide and transform the whole situation, attaining ultimate liberation.
