Repentance Text of the Manas (意根忏悔文)

I repent of myself: from beginningless time until this very life

Never once ceasing, I have stolen all the treasures of the Buddha

Foolish, deluded, and arrogant, claiming them as my own, reckoning everywhere

Grasping at everything, not knowing that everything is originally the Buddha

How could there be a self? I and mine — seeing profit, forgetting righteousness

Not knowing gratitude and nurture; because of grasping (upādāna), I have never escaped

The deep pit of karmic obstructions: impoverished life after life, suffering birth after birth

I repent of myself: from beginningless time until this very life

Discriminating everything, grasping it as self — the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) and the conceit of self

My self-love and self-delusion, constantly deliberating (manasikāra), imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva)

Grasping seeing as self, grasping hearing as self, grasping smelling as self

Grasping tasting as self, grasping touching as self, grasping consciousness as self

Grasping that I can perform all deeds, grasping that I can discern

all principles of dharmas, grasping that I can accomplish supreme and venerable merit

Only today do I know that in truth I am nothing at all

I repent of myself: from beginningless time until this very life

Grasping my faculties and body, grasping my surrounding world, grasping my supernatural powers

Grasping my virtues and abilities, grasping my becoming a Buddha, grasping my propagating the Dharma

Grasping my delivering sentient beings — only today do I know that in truth I

can do nothing at all. From the past I falsely grasped at the worldly,

and until now I have falsely grasped at the transcendental. With such false grasping,

I deeply perceive that the World-Honored One will not bestow a prediction (vyākaraṇa) upon me

Yet hoping for a prediction, the thieving mind refuses to die — when will I ever ascend

the supreme jeweled seat? From now on, where shall I go, what shall I do?

Thief or person of integrity — I must choose one: wash my heart and change my face,

reform myself and start anew, returning everything that is not mine

Bare and naked, utterly unadorned, moving freely at ease, going forth in nonaction (wu-wei)
